Government Job Interviews in South Africa: What to Expect

Updated July 2026 · Lightbizhub

A public service interview is a scored panel assessment, not a conversation. Knowing that changes how you prepare.

How the panel works

You will usually face three to five people, typically including a chairperson, a subject specialist and an HR representative. Each scores you independently against agreed criteria drawn from the advert.

Questions are generally standardised, so every candidate is asked the same things. That is why the process can feel formal — the panel is protecting fairness, not being unfriendly.

Questions come from the advert

This is the most useful thing to know. Panels build questions from the stated requirements and duties. Work through the advert line by line and prepare an example for each one.

Structure your answers

Situation, task, action, result. Name the context, what you were responsible for, what you did, and what happened.

Panels are scoring evidence. An answer without a specific example is hard to score, however articulate it sounds.

Topics that come up regularly

  • Batho Pele principles and public service values
  • The PFMA or MFMA, depending on the sphere of government
  • Relevant legislation for the post
  • The department mandate and strategic priorities
  • Handling conflict, deadlines and limited resources
  • Reporting lines and stakeholder management

Read the department annual report before you go. Candidates who can name a departmental priority stand out immediately.

Practical assessments

Senior posts often include a written exercise, presentation or in-basket assessment on the same day. The invitation should say so. If it does not, ask when confirming attendance.

Documents to bring

  • Certified copies of qualifications and ID, unless told otherwise
  • SAQA evaluation for any foreign qualification
  • Proof of professional registration where required
  • A copy of your application and CV

After the interview

Public service appointments take time. Verification, security screening and approvals can run for weeks or months. Silence is normal and rarely means rejection.

If the advert named a contact person for enquiries, a polite follow-up after several weeks is acceptable.
