Why Business Funding Applications Get Declined

Updated July 2026 · Lightbizhub

Most declines are not about the business idea. They are about documentation, compliance and numbers that do not survive scrutiny.

The administrative declines

Reason Fix before applying
Tax non-compliance Check status on eFiling and resolve
CIPC not in good standing File outstanding annual returns
Incomplete application Submit every document at once
No financial records Prepare management accounts
Personal and business banking mixed Separate accounts, then build history

The financial declines

No demonstrated ability to repay

Your own projections must show cash left over after costs and drawings to service the repayment. Many applications fail on their own numbers.

Bank statements contradict the plan

Funders read statements. Turnover claimed in the plan that does not appear in the account ends the conversation.

Existing debt

Undisclosed loans surface in a credit check. Disclose them.

Owner drawings too high

Where drawings consume most of the profit, there is nothing to repay from. This is common and rarely noticed by the applicant.

The strategic declines

  • Amount requested unrelated to the itemised need
  • No evidence of demand — no contracts, orders or trading history
  • Sector outside the funder’s mandate
  • No plan for what happens if revenue is slower than projected

If you are declined

Ask for the reason in writing. Most institutions will give it, and it is usually specific and fixable.

Reapplying with the same package produces the same answer. Fix the stated gap, build a few more months of trading history, and go back.
