CSD Registration: How to Register on the Central Supplier Database

Updated July 2026 · Lightbizhub

If you are not registered and active on the Central Supplier Database, you cannot be awarded a government contract. It is free, and it is the first thing to fix.

What the CSD is

The Central Supplier Database is National Treasury’s single register of suppliers to organs of state. Every national and provincial department, and most municipalities and SOEs, checks it before awarding.

It replaced the situation where every department kept its own supplier list. You register once, centrally.

What you need before you start

  • CIPC registration number
  • Company bank account details
  • Tax reference number
  • Directors’ identity numbers
  • B-BBEE certificate or sworn affidavit, if you have one

How to register

  1. Go to the CSD portal at secure.csd.gov.za
  2. Create a user account with an email address you actually monitor
  3. Capture your supplier details, banking, tax and directors
  4. Submit and wait for verification

The CSD verifies your details automatically against CIPC, SARS and your bank. Where those records do not match, registration stalls.

The detail that catches people

Your bank account name must match your registered company name exactly. A trading name on the account will fail verification, and the error message is not always clear about why.

The part almost everyone misses

CSD checks your tax compliance status with SARS on an ongoing basis, not just at registration. If your tax status goes non-compliant, your CSD record reflects it and you are filtered out of tender processes automatically.

There is no warning email. Businesses typically discover this months later, wondering why they stopped being shortlisted.

What to check quarterly

  • Your CSD supplier number is active
  • Tax compliance status shows compliant
  • Banking details are current
  • Director changes have been updated
  • B-BBEE certificate has not expired

None of that costs anything. It just has to be done.
