Most South African government vacancies are never advertised on job boards. They appear in the DPSA Public Service Vacancy Circular, published weekly.
What the circular is
The Department of Public Service and Administration publishes a consolidated circular listing vacancies across national and provincial departments. It comes out weekly, usually on a Friday, as a single PDF that can run to over a hundred pages.
If you are serious about a public service post, this is the primary source. Job boards carry a fraction of what the circular contains, and often later.
Where to get it
- The DPSA website, under vacancies
- Individual department websites, which republish their own entries
- Provincial government sites for provincial posts
Download the PDF rather than relying on a summary. Third-party sites that repost vacancies frequently omit the reference number or the closing date.
How to read an entry
Each vacancy follows the same structure. Read all of it before applying.

Departments specify how to apply — email, post, or hand delivery — and reject applications sent another way. This line is easy to skip and expensive to miss.
A workable weekly routine
- Download the new circular each week
- Search the PDF for your field, qualification level and preferred province
- Shortlist posts you genuinely meet the minimum requirements for
- For each one, tailor your CV to the stated requirements
- Download a fresh Z83 per application
- Diarise the closing date
Applying for posts you do not qualify for
Minimum requirements are applied strictly in the public service. If a post requires NQF 7 and you hold NQF 6, the application will be screened out regardless of experience.
Your time is better spent on three well-tailored applications for posts you meet than twenty generic ones you do not.
